Consider a chess variant on a (probably large) 2D board in which in pieces can typically move farther in one move than they can capture; that is, their move range is greater than their capture range.
The goal is to somewhat capture the freedom of movement of 3D -- there's lots of space to "go around" point obstacles -- but without the UI and other difficulties of 3D. This is a half baked idea; not sure if it even works for this purpose.
