Italy Passes 10,000 Deaths Due To COVID-19

March 28, 2020

#15,150

With the caveat that there are probably many more cases, and substantially more deaths, than have been counted, Italy passed a grim milestone today announcing 889 additional deaths from COVID-19, raising their total to 10,023.
Nearly 6,000 additional cases (n=5975) were confirmed over the past 24 hours, bringing that total to 92,472. Eighteen days into their nationwide lockdown - while the number of cases have leveled off - we've not seen a serious reduction in daily case counts.
The preliminary CFR continues to rise, particularly in hard hit Lombardy, where today it broke 15% for the first time.  Across the rest of Italy, death rate among known cases is just over 7.6%.  Both are far higher than anything we've seen elsewhere in the world.

The reasons behind Italy's extraordinary CFR aren't clear, although an older population with a high incidence of comorbidities, a serious undercounting of mild and moderate cases, and an overwhelmed healthcare system have all been mentioned as contributing factors.
